Nanyuki sits on the equator at the foot of Mount Kenya, and it is the base for Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home of the last two northern white rhinos and Kenya's only chimpanzee sanctuary.
What the drive is like
The road is good tarmac all the way: out of Nairobi on the Thika Superhighway, through the farmland of central Kenya, and up towards Mount Kenya. It is about 200 km to Nanyuki and takes around three hours, a little more for lodges beyond the town.
Ol Pejeta, Mount Kenya and the north
Ol Pejeta's main gate is a short drive from Nanyuki. Many visitors spend two nights there, then continue north to Samburu for the Special Five. See our Ol Pejeta guide and Samburu and the Special Five.
